"Very fun, very entertaining"
I have the hardest time watching animation. I don’t know why I have such a hard time with, but when I watch animation I get this sever ADHD. The animation is usually very cool to me for the first few minutes, but then it usually becomes stale. I have a hard time with it all, from “Heavy Metal” to “Dumbo”. I could probably count on one hand all of the animated features I’ve have actually sat through until the end. Today I am actually going to write my second review of an animated feature. Please keep in mind that I usually turn down animation submissions b/c I know there is a strong possibility that I will not give the review a fair shake.
“Saul Goodman” has almost rejuvenated my feelings toward animated film. More than that, after watching this indie film a cloud seemed to move out of the way of my limited mental view of the work it takes to complete an animated feature. Especially when you are working on the film yourself. This is Jim Connell’s baby, his delivery of an extremely solid adult oriented animation. And no, this is not the typical anime. The style that Connell uses reminded me of the film sections of present day video games, but better. Even better because I didn’t have to press X to get to the next segment or drive a god damn car to the next checkpoint. “Saul Goodman” took Connell two years to complete and it is easy to see his blood, sweat and mind inside the images. The film has an exceptional attention to detail inside of every pixel.
I could probably say that I get bored with animation because of the story lines. Most are either too silly, too simple, too absurd or just to out there for me. I need something to relate to. “Saul Goodman” had me because I myself like to think of things in the big picture format. I know that conspiracy theories are usually absurd, but you have to admit that some do make sense and could be a hard copy or picture away from being truth. Saul Goodman works on a presidential campaign, he is deep in the shit. The film starts with Saul breaking down a story he is reading in the newspaper. From this story of murder Saul tells a stranger of other stories and how they all are related to this simple case of murder. This is a smart script. Very fun, very entertaining, very thought out and very tight. At times I felt like the film was making fun of the conspiracy theorists that plague the Internet. At other times I felt like the film did a good job at making the viewer aware that there is a bigger picture than what you see on the nightly news. The film does good at blending the two ideas, everyone can have fun with this film. In closure I would like to say that “Saul Goodman” is the headiest piece of animation I have seen. It’s all good man. |
